I love teaching because I get to support children as they work through challenges, grow in confidence, and become more independent learners.

I became a teacher because I understand adversity. Growing up in a single-parent household, I faced poverty, exposure to gangs, and physical challenges that required a walker. A life-changing surgery in sixth grade gave me new opportunities. Those experiences shaped my purpose—to help students overcome challenges, build confidence, and believe they can control their future.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceOne of my most memorable experiences was leading a Boy Scouts of America adventure unit, where I took inner-city high school students camping, horseback riding, kayaking, and climbing. For many, it was their first time outside their community. They built confidence, independence, and a new perspective on life. Years later, they still share those memories and now pass those experiences on to their own children.
What would you do with the $25,000?I would use part of the $25,000 to create a travel experience club, giving my students exposure to nature, history, and hands-on challenges that build teamwork, communication, and goal setting. These experiences would help them see beyond their environment and earn success through hard work. The remaining funds would support my continued education so I can be an even stronger, more impactful educator for my students.
