Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I care about the individual and who they are becoming, not just what they can do musically. Music may be what brings us together, but confidence, empathy, and courage are the outcomes. I love creating spaces where students can be creative, take risks, support one another and grow. Teaching lets me build skill and character, and shaping the future is what matters to me.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experiences are when students and parents tell me I'm the reason their child wants to come to school. This tells me that I'm trusted and building a space that is safe, energizing, and meaningful enough to draw students in to be their best selves. It's not about being the favorite teacher, but being a steady, positive influence in a child's life.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Professionally, I would use part of it to create a keyboard studio where each student had a creative work station. I would purchase an electronic drum kit, and create a recording booth if possible. I would also create a scholarship fund for kids who want to purse music or need an instrument for home, but can't afford it. Personally, I would invest it to help offset the cost of sending my own 4 children to college.
