I became a life skills teacher because I see potential where others see limits. I love finding where individuals with disabilities shine and help them grow toward independence. The small wins matter to me: the first “hi”, the zipped coat, a self-regulated moment. There are things that matter more than test scores, and every child deserves someone who sees what they can do and helps them achieve that.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceMy most memorable experience was receiving the Friends of Autism Team Award. I was a new teacher, placed in a role with no structure, and I had to build the program from the ground up. It meant collaborating with countless professionals, attending trainings, and learning fast. Being recognized wasn’t just about me, but it honored the hard work my paras and students put in to create something strong and meaningful.
What would you do with the $25,000?If I had $25,000, I would invest in my personal life. I’d take a meaningful vacation to rest and reset, and I’d turn my home into a true sanctuary. Teaching takes so much energy, and I’d use that money to create spaces that help me decompress and recharge to reduce burn-out. When I’m grounded at home, I show up for my students, my family, and myself.
