Tell us why you became a teacher

Throughout my educational career, many teachers inspired me, especially Joan Kelly. I observed firsthand how Mrs. Kelly made a lasting impact on each of her student’s lives. She made a difference by focusing on the details—things that could have been easily overlooked in the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life. Mrs. Kelly was enthusiastic, caring and dedicated to keeping her students engaged in the learning process. I wanted to be just like Mrs. Kelly and leave a lasting impact on kids.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

A memorable teaching moment often stems from a breakthrough or unexpected experience that leaves a lasting impact. It is difficult to choose one particular moment as I am lucky enough to experience these regularly with my students. Watching them grow academically, emotionally and personally is so rewarding. There are few better feelings than when a student returns from college or bumping into a former student in the neighborhood and you can see them thriving and succeeding!

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I were to win the $25,000, I would support a local group called "Values In Action" which provides students with the experience to learn employable skills as well as skills necessary to succeed in life. I would also use some of the funds to erase some of my debt. As you know, teachers often struggle economically and therefore accumulate debt. My life debt free is a huge goal of mine.
