Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher to serve the same community that molded me in Oxnard. I grew up in a hardworking family that believed education could open doors. Many of my students share similar stories, and I see myself in them. I wanted to be the teacher who shows them their culture, language, and experiences matter. Teaching allows me to give back, uplift families, and help students believe in their potential.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable experiences is watching my students share their talents and voices with confidence. As a former mariachi singer, I introduced students to Norteño music, and seeing them perform for their parents filled me with pride. I have also guided students through writing and speech competitions where many have placed and represented our school. Watching them grow in confidence and celebrate their culture reminds me why teaching matters.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use the funds to expand our student music program by purchasing a class set of accordions and guitars. Many of my students are eager to learn Norteño music, but there are not enough instruments, so they often have to share. Having a full set would allow every student the opportunity to participate, practice, and perform. Music builds confidence, strengthens cultural pride, and brings families together when students perform for their community.
