I love teaching because I get to build real relationships daily, use humor to spark curiosity, and help them be more confident in themselves

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because of my experiences as an older brother and as a youth counselor at my church and local rec center. I saw how powerful relationships can be in shaping young lives. The connections I built showed me that when students feel known and supported, they grow in confidence and character. Teaching allows me to build those meaningful relationships daily and positively impact students beyond academics.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching moment actually happened outside the classroom. A former student who had dropped out reached out to me. I worried I hadn’t mentored him well, but he sent a photo of his GED 2 years later and said I inspired him during a dark time to keep going. I don’t always know if I’m making a difference, but that moment affirmed my purpose and strengthened my confidence in why I teach.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would first invest part of it into creating more engaging learning experiences for my students by buying 10 new microscopes (ours are from the 80s), visual models, and hands-on resources that make science come alive. The remainder would support my family and build long-term financial stability by paying off my car and probably take a vacation to a dream place like Hawaii.
