I love teaching music because it helps students discover who they are & teaches them how to be their best.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because of the impact of educators in my life. I saw that I had people believing in me and advocating for my success. In music, community is really important. With a combination of those things, I knew that I wanted others to have that same community connection and support.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

In my rural high school band, we currently have eight members. When people hear that, they typically get an idea in their head of what they think the students can do. However, seeing others see that these students can do great things always brings a sense of pride! Watching my students succeed in various contests and festivals has been rewarding. Not only do students see thier hard work paying off, but also they are showing the community that what they do matters.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would first make sure that my wife (also a teacher) and I are taken care of, then I would make sure that my school gets some new instruments and equipment. Some of the equipment they are using looks as if it has been through a few world wars and back. Having equipment that the students can be proud of helps them build confidence.
