Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because someone gave me a chance. I struggled in school and didn’t always feel capable. Then a teacher put a trumpet in my hands, and everything changed. Music gave me confidence, purpose, and belonging. It showed me I mattered. I teach to give students that same chance—to discover their value, contribute to something bigger than themselves, and become the best version of who they can be.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable experience was leading my marching band to represent Illinois in the 2012 Fourth of July Parade in Washington, D.C. Watching students perform with pride on a national stage was unforgettable. Our drum majors laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, honoring sacrifice and service. Seeing them reflect at the monuments and celebrate our nation on the Capitol lawn was powerful and deeply patriotic.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If awarded $25,000, my first priority would be my family. They sacrifice countless hours while I invest in students, and I would love to take them on a meaningful vacation together. I would also give back to organizations that once gave me opportunities, groups that invest in young people and open doors the way others once did for me.
