Joan Kiser Rhea

I have been teaching for 43 years and can’t think of anything that I love more. It’s the students that have gone on to achieve great things.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I always wanted to do something to help others and teaching seemed like the best path forward in order to acheive that goal. It has become my whole life and I cannot think of a better way to have spent the past 43 years.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching moments happen after my students have graduated high school. I have built many unique relationships with my students and when they call me to tell me about their achievements, it brings so much joy to my heart. It's the students who tell me they recieved their white coats during clinicals, ask me to help them advance in their careers when science and chemistry is involved, talk about how I had such an impact in shaping their lives, or even invite me to their weddings.

What would you do with the $25,000?

After 43 years of teaching, I am ready to retire and travel. I would use the $25,000 to fund my adventures around the United States of America and Canada in my motorhome.
