Well, I tried every occupation I could think of and disliked them all, so I figured I'd try the one thing I told myself I'd never do (I didn't particularly like authority as a kid), despite everyone around me suggesting I'd be good at it! On day one, I realized they were all right. More than that, I realized this was the purpose I’d been searching for my entire life, and I get to do it by teaching psychology, sociology, and philosophy! I feel so lucky to do this and with the most amazing kids!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Oh, every day is memorable! Some events that stand out are when a student was published in a philosophy magazine with the work they did in my class, and another created an archival research study on dissociative identity disorder that had not previously been done in modern research, and which she has continued into college. Mostly though, the moments I hold close to my heart are those when a student is seeking comfort and I'm able to offer a safe place for them to be heard and respected.

What would you do with the $25,000?

First, debt! Then, I’d use it to help my dad with a comfortable living situation. That would give me a lot of peace knowing he is taken care of. I’d also set some aside for hobbies I’ve picked up late in life but put on pause: ice skating, horseback riding, and maybe finally try drum lessons. A teacher is a forever learner!
