Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because teachers saved my life. Growing up in extreme poverty, my future was limited from the start. There was no way I was ever going to amount to something - not with an addict for a mother. It was a teacher who showed me that education was my way out. Through their help, I became the first college graduate in my family. I knew that I wanted to do the same for students all over this country. I wanted to show them their way forward - whatever path they choose.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

The day before break was all chaos and candy canes. In the middle of the gift parade, one student handed me a tiny clothing tag she’d cut from her own shirt—her favorite bear. She didn’t have money for a present, so she gave me something she loved. I hugged her through tears. That little tag is still my most treasured gift.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I am not only a teacher but a mother of five amazing kids. I would use that money to help fund their college and career experiences. With the oldest being 17 (and choosing education as her future career) and the youngest 7, this would help ease a huge financial burden for my husband and I in these coming years. We want them to do what they dream while not worrying about finances as young adults.
