Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I love the moment that it clicks for students, and I enjoy helping them reach that point. Music is a huge part of my life, and I want to make sure that all students have the same opportunity to find an instrument that speaks to them and that they enjoy playing. It’s a lifelong skill that is also an emotional release.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable moment teaching was when I taught high school. I was working on a lyrical piece of music with my top band, and was really trying to get them to buy in emotionally. There was a bit of a struggle, but after we performed it I had a student come up to me and tell me “I understand what you mean now, I felt it emotionally” and that was one of the most impactful moments for me.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With the $25,000 I would purchase new instruments for my classroom, as well as new music that is representative of my students. Many instruments we have are 30+ years old, and need to be replaced. Our music library is outdated and does not include many diverse composers, or grade level appropriate music that is vibrant and interesting for students today.
