I love seeing the fire in my students' eyes match the energy coming from our bunsen burners as we explore relevant and interesting topics.

Tell us why you became a teacher

To continue the legacy of all of the great teachers I had myself. I went to college to study chemistry and as I got closer to graduation I knew I wanted to use my life to help others accomplish their dreams. My dad passed away the week after I graduated high school and two of my teachers came to the funeral. This always stuck with me and I want to be there for kids the way my teachers were for me. Every day I put my lanyard on and walk through the doors knowing that I may have the same impact.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

In my first year of teaching AP Chemistry we had a lockdown drill during a time sensitive lab. My students had just gotten to the part where they mixed the chemicals and were swirling their reactions when the announcement to hide came from the all-call. After rushing to get the kids to the hideaway place I looked around and all 12 of them were holding their reactions while silently swirling as we sat in the dark, locked classroom on the floor under the lab tables.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I am currently undergoing active cancer treatment for a brain tumor called astrocytoma. I was diagnosed in October 2024 while pregnant with my second child at 20 weeks. I have fought relentlessly to get back into the classroom. After brain surgery, I have had to change how I teach to accommodate my needs, but have also been able to reflect on how students with disabilities engage with science. I would use the money to help rebuild my curriculum and make science more accessible to all.
