Tell us why you became a teacher

I’ve wanted to be a teacher since kindergarten, lining up my stuffed animals and playing school for hours. As I grew up, I questioned my path, but everything became clear when my nephew with autism struggled in school. Seeing how the right support changed his world ignited my passion. I became a teacher to advocate for students, build confidence, and help every child see what they’re truly capable of.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable experience was my first year teaching first and second grade. I had a class full of students reading below the 25th percentile, and I felt completely ill-equipped to help them. I didn’t know where to begin, but I knew they deserved more. That moment ignited my passion for literacy and led me to become a reading specialist so I could better serve struggling readers and change their trajectory. I haven't stopped learning about and loving literacy ever since!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would invest in high-quality literacy resources + professional learning to better serve struggling readers. I’d expand access to evidence-based intervention materials, decodable texts, + family literacy supports. I would also create engaging, confidence-building experiences for students who need it most, because when children believe they can read, it changes everything. I’d also take my family on a tropical escape from the brutal Wisconsin winters to rest, recharge, and celebrate!
