Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher to make a difference and show students that you don’t choose what you are born into but with the power of education you can change your circumstances and become anything you desire. I grew having a very difficult childhood and school was a safe place for me where learned I could change my circumstances . I am living proof of changing my fate. I can connect to my students, show them I care and how to change their fate.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching moment is hearing back from my students as they become successful in their lives. I love seeing them thrive in life. One particular student explained to me that I didn’t realize how I saved her. She explained she was in a dark place and my care and concern helped her get through the hardest time of her life after losing her mom. It is not just about academics for me. It is making sure students are socially and emotionally well too.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would spend some of the money on funding classroom libraries in my school and for student needs. Our classroom libraries are in desperate need of upgrades with high interest reading materials. Unfortunately many students do not enjoy reading because they have not found books that interest them. I would use the money to fund classrooms in my school with books the students would choose. I would also fund our school with resources needed most by our students such as school supplies.
