I don’t remember ever wanting to be anything but a teacher. As a child, I played school in my basement and made my siblings sit through my lessons. Even though I loved pretending to teach, school was hard for me. I know what it feels like to struggle and not understand. That experience helps me teach with empathy and patience. I simply love children and learning alongside them—it brings me true joy.

Honestly, nearly every day brings a memorable moment. But looking back over 31 years, one stands out. When my students reached their reading goal, I promised to take a pie to the face—and I did! The laughter, cheers, and pure joy on their faces were unforgettable. It was a messy moment, but it showed them that reading is worth celebrating and that I’m all in for their success.

I work in a district that does not provide a book budget for its libraries. I would donate funds to each elementary library so we could purchase high-interest books that students are excited to read. Access to engaging books changes everything. I would also plan an educational trip to gain fresh insight and ideas, bringing new inspiration and experiences back to my students and school community.
