I always dreamed of becoming a writer and took creative writing and journalism in high school. After graduation, I struggled to find direction and changed majors several times. While earning my Associate’s degree, the assistant principal who once mentored me offered me a part-time job at my former middle school. Being surrounded by dedicated teachers inspired me to pursue education, where I discovered that teaching is a powerful way to inspire, guide, and shape students’ futures.

My most memorable teaching moments are not awards, but the small connections that happen every day. Students return to my classroom just to check on me, spend lunch there because they feel safe, or ask if they will be in my class again. Even years later, former students call out “Mr. Jay!” in stores or restaurants. One student once asked to take a picture with me at Target. These moments remind me that teaching is about belonging, relationships, and lasting impact.

If I were awarded the $25,000, I would use it to continue caring for my elderly mother at home. I became her primary caregiver in 2020 due to serious health issues and even purchased a home so she could live safely with me. We have faced multiple surgeries and cancer, and healthcare costs are extremely expensive. These funds would help ensure she continues receiving the care and support she needs in the comfort of our home.
