Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I know what it feels like to grow up unseen. Raised by a single mother in a poverty-stricken community, I carried dreams bigger than my circumstances. In school, children with special needs were sent to the basement and called “bad.” No one asked what they needed. I did. I teach to break that silence, to replace labels with love. I teach so every child who walks through my door knows they are powerful, protected, and worthy of a future greater than their fears now!!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching experiences was watching a child with an IEP transform before my eyes. He began the year frustrated, labeled as difficult, and often isolated. Instead of focusing on behavior, I focused on understanding his needs. With patience, structure, and small celebrations, he found his voice. The day he raised his hand independently, his smile filled the room. In that moment, I was reminded that teaching is not about control, but about helping children believe they can.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If awarded the $25,000, I would create spaces of healing and belonging in my school. I would build a sensory and meditation room for students who need calm, safety, and regulation, and one for staff who carry so much each day. I would invest in inclusive resources, diverse books, and tools that help every child feel seen and supported. This funding would not just buy materials; it would create environments where children and educators can breathe, reset, and thrive.
