Connect Tell us why you became a teacher

As the youngest of eight children, I witnessed the challenges faced by those who didn’t finish high school and the hardships that lasted a lifetime. My dad had only an eighth grade education, born of immigrants. When I learned that education could change my future, I pursued it relentlessly, paying for my own college and graduate degree. As a teacher, I can help children overcome extreme obstacles or dysfunction to create a better life for themselves through hard work, grit, and passion.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

While trying to capitalize on a learning opportunity with a stubborn student, I found that not all points need to be proven. The student argued that salt and fresh water were both drinkable, so I encouraged the class to test his theory. He added three teaspoons of salt to a cup, filled it with water, and gulped it down which immediately induced projectile vomiting. Explaining the “experience” to his father was rather challenging, so I now rely on “selective opportunities” carefully researched.:)

What would you do with the $25,000?

Building a stronger classroom library would be a huge priority as my materials are rather dated. Personally, I would love to travel with my children in appreciation for their efforts in earning their college degrees with honors while mentoring and working. Their dad died before they started kindergarten and they chose to pursue education to become examples for others in spite of the challenges they faced. They are leaders in their communities and find ways to continually help others.
