Tell us why you became a teacher

I wanted to change the way children are seen in the early childhood environment. I felt that this was one of the most important times in a child’s life to explore ideas, feel seen and heard through the actions and decisions of the teacher. Creating a safe, fun, creative and exploratory space was my focus and changed me as much as the children.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I was reading a story to a small group of children. It was a beautifully illustrated book, which I loved. As I read the book, the children were mesmerized. They believed every word I read to them, and I realized, with deep gravity the importance of my role. They trusted me, believed me and I felt this complete responsibility of the moment, but also the magical opportunity to have a positive impact on their lives. That moment still gives me shivers as I realized that “this” is what I want to do.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I am inspired by the Reggio Emilia pedagogy and have been traveling to Italy since 1996 to hear those educators share their knowledge. I would go back to Italy, but this time I would share my love of the culture with my two grandchildren. I would take them to Italy to expand their experiences of another culture. I’d also buy some more science materials for my class. Some of them are original to my class and 36 years of wear and tear has taken their toll. My favorite magnet was just dropped. Oops
