Tell us why you became a teacher

I have always loved science and nature. I did not initially want to be a teacher. I was initially going to pursue the health sciences or research. However, along my journey in life through various volunteer & job experiences (ChildLife Volunteer, Special Education Classroom Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, Substitute teacher, and independent artist), I saw a need to encourage more people to pursue the sciences. I wanted to help encourage a love of learning science in my future students.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

In my five years of teaching (middle school & high school science), there have been several memorable teaching experiences. Whether it is encouraging my students to use their creativity in various projects, providing hands-on, interactive opportunities in my classroom, taking students on science-focused field trips, or seeing my students become more curious about the science topics covered in my classes.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would utilize the money to help myself & others. I would use some of the money to pay toward student loans I incurred while working on my second Master's degree (an MPS in Wildlife Ecology & Management). I would use some of the money to pay for supplies for my students & classroom. I would donate some money to those in need. Finally, I would use some of the money towards other educational programs, research opportunities, field experiences, etc.
