Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because of my first grade teacher. I admired her so much that I decided, right then, to be just like her—and I never changed my mind. During that time, my mom was having multiple surgeries and my dad was raising my two younger brothers and me on his own. He would sometimes forget to pick me up, and my teacher would patiently stay with me, creating special projects and making me feel safe, seen, and valued. I wanted to be that person for someone else.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching moments happened on the way to lunch. A student told me a classmate had hit him. When I asked if it was true, the little boy straightened his shoulders, looked me in the eye, and said, “Yes, Mrs. Portwood, I did.” His honesty and bravery melted my heart. I calmly reminded him that we don’t hit, thanked him for telling the truth, and we moved on. It was such a simple moment—but such a powerful one.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I were awarded $25,000, I would use it to finish long-needed home projects to create a more stable, peaceful space for my three children. I would also expand our school pantry so no child in our building has to learn on an empty stomach. Supporting my own family while helping feed others would be a true blessing and allow me to keep showing up fully for the students and community I love.
