Tell us why you became a teacher

I have never wanted to be anything other than a teacher. I have always loved to learn, and that love was fostered not just by my parents, but by the incredible teachers I have had. As a child, I couldn't believe that my teachers were paid to show, teach, motivate, and encourage us (and have fun). I would come home from school and teach my younger brothers (to their dismay) what I learned that day. My love of learning, helping, and reading and writing is my why.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Memorable is a very abstract word. I've had all kinds of memorable experiences: good, bad, funny, heartbreaking, and insightful. I may be lazy for not picking one specific experience, but I'll say this- what has stayed with me the most is when students reach out once they've graduated. To have former students send me an email or visit when they're home to say hello, to tell me how prepared they felt for life after high school, or to say thank you is the most rewarding experience of my career.

What would you do with the $25,000?

My husband and I are both English teachers, so, yes, some of the money would go to spoiling ourselves and our two boys. I don't know how exciting we are, though, so there wouldn't be grand purchases. The money would help us live more comfortably and peacefully. Books. Oh, the books! Running shoes for XC season, drinks and cheese appetizers with my colleagues who deserve this award more than I do, and, maybe golf gear for my husband ;).
