Tell us why you became a teacher

My sixth-grade teacher, Mrs.Dorsey Draper, was my inspiration to become a teacher. I wanted to be like her. She made time for all her students encouraging each one to work hard to be his/her very best. A special moment was being initiated into the educational honor society with her. I was a senior in college, and she was working on her master’s degree. I try to be a “Dorsey Draper” every day.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I’m not sure I have just one. I noticed a young man being teased because he had a hard time trying to form his answers at the beginning of a school year. I worked with him one on one. He soon answered questions confidently with a huge smile. On another occasion, I sensed that one young lady was becoming quiet and withdrawn. After talking to her a few times, she agreed to see our counselor. She was on the verge of deep depression. Students know that my classroom is a safe space with no judgement.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would pay-off my car! That would be such a blessing!
