Tell us why you became a teacher

Growing up I never planned on being a teacher! Kids stressed me out and I didn’t always know how to interact with them. But I’ve always loved helping people. As I got older, I realized some children didn’t have all the support or care they needed outside of school. I became a teacher to love and support the kids who may not always get enough of that at home -to teach them academics, but also little life skills too, like tying their shoes! I became a teacher to help kids feel loved and valued!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My favorite moment as a teacher tends to happen every year! It’s the moment when a quiet student speaks up because they get excited about something, or when a student who is different from the others gets invited to the birthday party or gets cheered up by their classmates! Seeing the students learn to love themselves, each other, and all of the joy they bring one another is one of the best moments I get to experience.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would put a large portion of it toward an after-school program that helps students who may not have extra support outside of school. They provide things like snacks, help with homework, and a safe place for students to go. I would also use some of it in my own classroom to help my students have the best 4th grade year possible! On a personal note, a small portion would go toward helping my brother get LASIK eye surgery. He has always been one of my biggest supporters!
