One of my most memorable teaching experiences was when a troubled student once approached me and told me, very matter-of-factly, that he was “the bad kid.” He had accepted that label as his identity, as if his mistakes defined who he was and who he would always be. I remember not believing him — not because he hadn’t struggled, but because I could see more in him than his behavior. I would be finishing the final chapter of planning one of the most important days of my life and beginning the first adventure of our marriage. It would allow us to fully pay for our upcoming wedding without stress lingering in the background, letting us focus on what truly matters: celebrating our love with the people who mean the most to us.
