I started out as a Social Worker helping Unhoused Families living in Skidrow in LA. I became disheartened after my adult clients would make so much progress and then suddenly return to destructive, harmful behaviors that erased all the work they had done. Watching their children go along for the ride was devastating. Becoming a teacher meant that I could help, love and support my young students in their love of learning in a safe environment where they could grow and look towards a happy future.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceI have so many memorable moments. One year I was teaching BF 4th grade in South LA. I had a student and his mom who were both dealing with severe ptsd and depression. But in my classroom, I had the control I needed to block out the outside world and help my student blnotice his talents and gifts. For the first time, he felt successful and happy. And mom was able to see that her son could create, learn and smile in a safe learning environment. This meant everything to the 3 of us.
What would you do with the $25,000?First, take a Mother-Daughter trip. The remainder would go into insurance and investment accounts for my 2 girls…ages 23 and 15.
