Learn MoreI struggled socially and academically. Despite strong test scores, I underperformed in class and struggled to connect with peers. Teachers told me I was a poor student unlikely to succeed, which was devastating because I loved learning. In college, a work-study job with at-risk children revealed my gift for supporting neurodivergent students. Later diagnosed with ADHD and autism, I now specialize in science education in special education, to help my students thrive as their authentic selves.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceWhile working in a private school, I taught a fourth grader who hated school and performed at about a first grade level in reading and math. Discovering his love of tools, I turned a closet into his “shop,” where he repaired school items. He read manuals, managed a budget, and solved problems. In six months, his skills rose to third grade level—and the child who once hated school told his father he loved learning.
What would you do with the $25,000?The first thing I would do is pay down my student loans. I also would like to put a large portion toward equipment and learning aids for my classroom as well as supplies for the schools club I serve as faculty advisor for. I’d also like to give a bit to a couple of my students who are interested in going to college but whose family would struggle with incidental costs like books.
