I love teaching because I help students see possibilities beyond their circumstances and inspire new dreams for their futures.

Growing up in rural South Carolina, tobacco fields shaped my days, but poverty didn’t define me. My mother taught me the value of education despite hardship. In school, teachers inspired me to dream beyond my circumstances and showed me new possibilities. Their guidance led me to become a teacher, hoping to open doors for rural students. I honor my roots and teachers by helping others imagine and achieve lives beyond fields.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceMy most memorable moments as a teacher happen outside the classroom, when former students—now adults—share how a lesson or encouraging word made a lasting difference. Some call me their favorite teacher and introduce me to their own children, which fills me with pride. These impromptu reunions remind me that teaching’s impact goes far beyond tests; it becomes part of each student’s story and influences how they shape the next generation.
What would you do with the $25,000?I would use a portion of the $25,000 to host a STEAM Family Day with food, hands-on activities, games, and prizes to engage former students and their families. The other part of the funds would create scholarships for economically challenged, first-generation rural students who show academic promise, providing financial support and a brief out-of-state service-learning experience to broaden perspectives, build skills, and strengthen community ties.
