Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher to support students who feel unseen or behind. As a military child and a girl in the 1970s with undiagnosed dyslexia, I struggled to read until sixth grade. Those experiences help me walk in the footsteps of children who just need love, patience, and belief. I teach to help students find their confidence, discover their strengths, and realize they are capable of success.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching moments are when students gain independence. In the early 90s, I worked with a four-year-old with Down syndrome who was not expected to walk. After weeks of support and play, he took three steps to his mother, who fell to her knees in tears. Another student with damaged vocal cords learned to use a communication device and said, “I love you, Mom.” I teach for those life-changing moments that open doors and give children a voice.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If given $25,000 for school use, I would divide it between improving our afterschool theater space and creating a fund to support students who cannot afford fees, costumes, or trips. Our children deserve both opportunity and access. If it were for personal use, I would create a savings or adventure fund for my family that is meaningful, responsible, and lasting.
