Tell us why you became a teacher

I started substitute teaching in college just to pay my way through. I began getting more and more engaged and enjoyed helping students or giving them mini lessons/sharing my knowledge with them. I enjoyed talking to high school students about their future and love that the younger kiddos are so full of energy. I've always had a love for art and took the position when it became available. This was the best way to combine my passion for art and love for teaching. BEST DECISION I EVER MADE!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I don't have one specific moment, but my heart becomes full anytime I have an interaction with a student who shares a passion for creativity. I've had a few students this year, most I didn't expect, to say "I want to be an art teacher just like you when I grow up." It sounds cliche, but it truly is one of the most heart warming experiences. I can look at my excellent ratings from my admin all day, but to know I'm making an impact on my students is beyond fulfilling. I truly feel like I won.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Our building is under construction, so I've been teaching on a cart my first 2 years. It has been rough, but I'm making the best of it. I've learned to adapt. Next year I will finally have my own room and would use the $25k to buy TONS of supplies for my classes! I'm looking to buy a kiln so my students can experience the art of ceramics beyond air dry. I have $1k, but this would cover the rest, plus supplies to get started! (And spread some love to my fellow teachers for much needed supplies!!)
