Haley DuPlessis

I love teaching because I help students grow their confidence and skills; I also get to be a positive role model/adult in their lives.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I've always believed that people grow and connect best with each other. I loved helping students find their voice and build their confidence through creativity as a music teacher. Now, as a school counselor who teaches guidance lessons, I'm proud to help students in a different way: by helping them deal with problems, become more resilient, and learn the skills they need to do well in and out of school. I've always taught because I want to help the whole child.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was with my very first group of students. Some were called "troublemakers," and a lot of people thought the worst of them. When they came in, I tried getting to know them better and gave them leadership roles. They became my right-hand students over time, leading warm-ups, answering questions, and setting a good mood. Seeing them grow into confident leaders taught me how important it is to trust students, have high expectations, and just believe in them.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I got the $25,000, I would use it to pay for a doctoral degree so I could help my students more. If I keep learning and growing in my job, I will be able to help even more students as a school counselor and teacher, use better methods in guidance lessons, and reach even more students. Investing in my growth ultimately means investing in the academic, social, and emotional success of the students I support every day.
