Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because education gave me confidence and opportunity, and I want to give that to others. As an ESL and Spanish teacher studying counseling, I create a safe, structured, and engaging classroom where students feel valued. I use humor to build connection and reduce fear, helping students take risks, grow academically, and believe in their potential.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable experiences began 25 years ago at a low-income high school in Wilson, NC, teaching ESL. I worked with students learning to survive between two cultures without losing their own. I started an AIM Club where we beautified the school, created cultural bulletin boards, organized educational trips, and mentored each other. Watching them grow into strong Hispanic leaders shaped my life as a teacher.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With a $25,000 prize, I would edit and publish my book to help teachers better support their students. I would take my 80 year old mother to Venice, her lifelong dream, and take my children to Japan and Hawaii, places they have always wanted to visit. If funds remain, I would begin developing an app to help others learn languages and expand their opportunities.
