Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher in the same district where I once was a student because I wanted to give back to my community. Growing up here shaped me, and I hope to be a role model for students who share similar backgrounds and experiences. I want them to know that where you come from does not determine who you can become, and that their dreams are possible with hard work.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching moments happened during a Lunar New Year lesson. I brought fortune cookies, chopsticks, and a conical hat for students to explore. When I took out the hat, one of my quietest students excitedly asked to wear it. The class later chanted for him to keep it. In that moment, I saw joy, confidence, and a strong sense of community in my classroom.

What would you do with the $25,000?

The first thing I would pay for a field trip to Medieval Times for my students. They deserve it for all the hard work they do everyday in class to show me their respect and love. The second thing I would invest the rest of the money, either stocks or a vacation property. Finally I would take my family out to dinner to their favorite restaurant. I think meeting Bill Nye would be enough!
