Tell us why you became a teacher

My first classroom was my bedroom floor, with toys lined up as my students. My greatest inspiration was my mom, a volunteer art teacher who filled our classroom with creativity and kindness. I still remember when she handed out sugar cookies and paintbrushes, then brought out frosting so we could “paint“ the cookies. In that moment, learning felt magical, and I knew I wanted to become a teacher who creates joyful, creative experiences, and makes every student feel seen, valued, and inspired.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was with an ELL student who dreamed of joining the gifted program. Though he didn’t qualify at first, he worked tirelessly, fueled by a love of science we nurtured in class. He later joined the magnet program, won first place in the state science fair, and earned a full college scholarship. Years later, he returned, saying my teaching had sparked his passion, perseverance, and love for learning.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use the $25,000 to give our students a safe, engaging outdoor classroom. Fallen trees have damaged the concrete sidewalk, railings, and caused erosion along our nature trail. I would repair the trail and add learning stations with seating. Students could explore, observe, and investigate nature, sparking curiosity and supporting science learning. This trail would give them a lasting space to discover and connect with the natural world.
