Tell us why you became a teacher

I've always wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. Growing up in a large family, I learned at a young age that if I wanted something, I had to work hard for it. On my mother's side, I'm a first-generation graduate, and on my father's side, I have many teachers to look up to. For over two decades, I've combined classroom instruction with coaching to show students that hard work, dedication, and belief in yourself open unlimited possibilities.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

There are so many! My most memorable teaching experience was helping a shy, introverted student overcome his fears. When he first attempted to present in front of his peers, he stormed out of the classroom in tears—the anxiety even made him physically ill. But watching him face those fears, complete the project, and present it with pride and confidence was one of my best teaching days. That moment reminded me why I teach.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Family is everything to me. I'd first set aside funds to help with my daughter's medical expenses—she receives treatment for a brain tumor at Children's Hospital in Colorado, requiring regular trips. I'd also invest in my grandchildren's futures. After caring for my loved ones, I'd use whatever is left for a well-deserved vacation. Travel rejuvenates me and reminds me to appreciate life's moments with those I love most.
