Tell us why you became a teacher

Once I left a 23 year long abusive relationship, I realized I had to take care of and be a role model for my three daughters by myself, with all my family in Egypt. I desperately started looking for a job when a friend of mine referred me for a teacher’s aide position. I hadn’t lived alone since I got married at 19, so I was extremely nervous. Yet the second I stepped into that classroom, I instantly fell in love. I knew I had found myself and my home in teaching. Teaching is my purpose.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

A student was giving every teacher difficulties, so she was transferred to my class. She rebelled and hated me at first, but I refused to give up on her. She often got in trouble for fidgeting or doodling, yet I noticed she answered questions with surprising awareness during those moments. I chose to show compassion and tried new teaching methods. She began to excel. On the last day, she apologized to me and explained that issues were due to her home life but that I helped her love school again.

What would you do with the $25,000?

As a single mother, it would take some of my stress off. I could use it for rent in the summer since there’s no pay. I would help my daughters pay off some of their student loan debt. I would use it to take care of my family and ease some of the financial burden we are constantly facing. I would definitely save some of it for emergencies. Without a doubt, I would donate some of that money to charity. I’m not rich, but I am thankful for what I have and will always give back.
