Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because, as a child, I often felt small in spaces that should have made me feel safe. I was bullied, sometimes even by those meant to protect me. I promised myself I would one day create the classroom I needed—one built on kindness, safety, and unwavering support. In middle school, one teacher saw me, believed in me, and changed my path. Now, I strive to be that steady light for my students, nurturing confidence, compassion, and the courage to grow.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was my first year. I had a little girl from Mexico who barely spoke English and was painfully shy. She reminded me so much of myself. I spent extra hours searching for resources to help her grow. Slowly, she began to blossom. Then we learned she had to move back to Mexico. We were heartbroken. But that moment showed me I had given her more than academics—I had given her safety, confidence, and connection. That’s when I knew teaching was my calling.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I received $25,000, I would first pay down my student loans to ease my financial burden and focus fully on teaching. I would also use part of the funds to provide snacks and social-emotional learning (SEL) items for my students, helping them explore and manage their feelings. Supporting their emotional growth alongside academics creates a safe, caring classroom where every child can thrive, feel understood, and build the confidence to succeed.
