Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because of the one educator that gave me light and purpose! She believe in me when I didn’t and changed my perspective on continuing my education. As ward of the state, I did not think I was smart enough to be in college. She encouraged me, tutored me, and believed in me. Allowing me to see, I can do anything! I knew I needed to help students shine, especially those needing the extra push!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

While teaching 7th grade special education, I had a student who often shut down when we transitioned into writing. She felt she couldn’t do it and simply didn’t believe in herself. I started working as a tutor in the after school program and encouraged her to come one afternoon. Over the course of that year, I watched her begin to enjoy writing. Well fast forward two years, she came to visit and shared she had read her written piece in front of the entire high school. I was so proud!

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000, I would honestly probably put a chunk toward loans but also put a bigger chunk toward owning a home and starting a family! Knowing me, I would also purchase a few book sets for my classroom!!
