Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I believe education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel. In my years teaching science and Spanish, I’ve seen that connection is at the heart of learning. In a world full of devices, students need human connection more than ever. As teachers, we help them find confidence, empathy, and their voice. Our students are our hope, and we are theirs.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable moments was with a shy kindergarten student who rarely spoke. Through a class pet project, our Spanish class pet became recognized in the community, and Spanish speakers would approach students to connect. When it was her turn, she brought it to a local Mexican restaurant, where staff welcomed her into the kitchen and spoke Spanish with her. She returned glowing with pride, and from that moment on, she began to find her voice and her place.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If awarded $25,000, I would expand my classroom library with engaging, accessible materials and share those resources with other educators through collaboration and professional learning. I would also help launch a community Spanish club for elementary students whose programs were cut, creating a model to expand access to language learning, connection, and opportunity.
