A special educator is an important role because I can see students’ strengths where others see struggle. I am a huge support system.

Tell us why you became a teacher

In high school, I dreamed of becoming a marine biologist. That path shifted when I joined an internship: I worked with students with special needs who were preparing to achieve their goal of competing in the Special Olympics. Watching their determination, growth, and joy sparked something in me. Experiencing the Special Olympics for the first time solidified my calling. I fell in love with helping children reach goals they once thought were impossible, and I knew my heart belonged in teaching.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was working with a student who struggled deeply with reading, but was never discouraged. Each day, we practiced phonics, sight words, and fluency, celebrating even the smallest progress. There were moments of frustration, but we kept going together. By April, she confidently read a Biscuit book aloud from beginning to end. Seeing her pride, independence, and newfound belief in herself was a moment I will never forget as an educator.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000, I would reinvest in my special education classroom by purchasing flexible seating, sensory tools, updated literacy and math interventions, and assistive technology to meet diverse learning needs. These resources would increase focus, independence, and confidence. I would also pursue professional development to strengthen my skills and better support and advocate for my students’ success.
