I became a teacher because science gave me purpose during one of the hardest seasons of my life. Learning about how life works, how cells grow, heal, and adapt grounded me. I wanted to give students that same spark: a place where curiosity feels powerful, questions are welcomed, and resilience is built. Teaching lets me turn content into confidence and show students they’re capable of more than they believe.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

It’s impossible to pick just one. I’ve had former students tell me they almost gave up, but didn’t because someone finally believed in them. I’ve seen their faces light up when I showed up to their games. I still get emails years later about college acceptances and career wins. And sometimes it’s a small, folded note on my desk on a hard day. The moments are countless, but every one reminds me this work changes lives.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I’d use it to breathe. My dog is battling cancer, and his treatment comes first. I’d fix or replace my car and move closer to school to cut my 2-hour commute. I’d stock my classroom so students never go without. I’d help my family who’s struggling. And I’d donate to the DLH Foundation supporting esophageal cancer research. Stability for me, support for others.
