Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because teachers have been very influential in my life. My grandma was a teacher and she was my first inspiration. In 6th and 7th grade I had two of the best teachers I have ever had. Before our academics, they really showed that they cared for us as a PERSON. They both truly wanted me to succeed and benefit in every aspect. I wanted to become a teacher to treat students like they treated me. They helped me, even at a young age, to recognize what was important first.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience came in my 2nd year of teaching. I had a student that had moved from the country of Columbia 3 days before he enrolled in my 1st grade class. He knew no english. He challenged me in more ways than I can count. I only had him in my class from Feb-May, but in that time he learned english and to read. He also learned that he was loved and he was able to be himself in the classroom. He loved to share about his culture and I truly think that helped him succeed.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000 I would work to help the students in my school and in my class. I have always wanted to create some kind of clothing or care closet in my classroom that would benefit them in different areas of life. I live in a very rural area and there are many that are less advantaged than me and I have a heart for helping them. I also am getting married in the fall and would love to use a little of it for that. I also volunteer weekly at my church and love to sponsor students for our summer camp
