Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I’ve loved working with children since I was young, growing up as the oldest of five and later babysitting and working with elementary students. School was hard for me.I was a troublemaker and barely graduated, often feeling unseen. I became the teacher I needed- one who makes every child feel worthy and loved. After serving 8 years in administration, I returned to teaching because my heart belongs in the classroom, where I can make the greatest difference!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable experiences was stepping in to teach a classroom of students with emotional and behavioral disabilities while I was a principal. It was one of the most challenging experiences of my career, but it reminded me that relationships must come first. Through patience and consistency, trust began to grow. The connections we built lasted far beyond that time and reinforced my belief that every child, no matter their challenges, needs someone who won’t give up on them.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I won $25,000, I would use it to create a calm, supportive classroom environment where every child feels safe, valued, and ready to learn. I would invest in flexible seating, calming spaces, and sensory tools to support students’ emotional and behavioral needs so they can focus and succeed. I would also provide engaging books and hands-on learning materials that reflect my students’ experiences and spark their curiosity.
