Tell us why you became a teacher

As a college basketball coach, I was chasing championships and contracts, but at a signing ceremony I realized my real win wasn’t trophies, it was transformation. Watching a young man’s life change through opportunity reminded me of the seeds my parents planted: education, effort, character, and responsibility to the next generation. I walked away from college basketball to walk into my calling helping students believe in themselves.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable experiences aren’t moments they’re relationships. Years later, former players and students still call, text, and show up just to talk about life. Watching them grow into leaders, parents, and professionals and knowing I had a small part in their journey that’s the real win. The trophies fade, but the relationships last.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I’d use the $25,000 to provide Mental Health First Aid training for as many educators as possible. I once had a student say “goodbye” before Thanksgiving break, and something in his voice made me pause. It wasn’t a normal goodbye it was a silent cry for help. Because I stopped and asked, we got him support before he left campus. I want every teacher equipped to hear what isn’t being said and help save a life.
