I love teaching 6th grade science because I get to spark curiosity and watch students discover how the world works.
Thank you for supporting Dustin Lucas in this year's competition. Your donations and participation will benefit The Planetary Society in their mission to advance space exploration, inspire discovery, and empower the next generation of innovators.
I became a teacher to spark curiosity and help students discover how capable they truly are. There’s nothing better than watching a student’s confidence grow when something finally clicks. I love creating a classroom where questions are welcomed, mistakes are part of learning, and science feels exciting instead of intimidating.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceOne of my most memorable teaching moments was during our physics unit. Inspired by a Bill Nye episode I loved as a kid, I recreated his famous bowling ball pendulum demonstration. Instead of a bowling ball, I used a tennis ball, pulled it back to my nose, and let it go. The students were frozen in suspense… then erupted when it worked. Their reactions were priceless, and it turned a simple lesson on energy into a moment they’ll never for.
What would you do with the $25,000?With $25,000, I would invest directly into hands-on science experiences, updating lab equipment, adding interactive STEM kits and real-world experiment materials. I’d expand technology for simulations and data collection, and create engaging lab stations that allow every student to explore, test and discover. My goal is simple, make science something students do, not just something they read about.
