From my teenage years, I was a young mom. My first job in Puerto Rico was as a classroom assistant, and it ignited my passion for teaching. When I moved to Philadelphia with my son, I volunteered while he attended Head Start, which motivated me to pursue college. I continued working as an assistant throughout my studies, eager to make a difference in children's lives. My love for working with kids has been a constant motivation in my life's journey.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceMy journey with my first student began in 2005 when I became his 1:1 aide. I remember him sitting quietly in the back, scared of classmates. Over time, I spent every day with him until fifth grade, gradually including him in group activities. Watching his behavior improve each day was rewarding. He gained confidence on trips, improved his grades, and developed better behavior. His progress was very gratifying and made me feel it's my vocation.
What would you do with the $25,000?I want to use the money to enhance support for my school's Learning Support students. They need specific tools that will help improve their academic performance, such as reading pens, headphones, iPads, text-to-speech devices, and many more tools needed for their various needs.
