I became a teacher because someone believed in me before I believed in myself. My mom encouraged me to pursue teaching, convinced I had the heart to make a difference. I earned my master’s in education, and 35 years later I’m grateful I followed her advice. I teach high school because students need encouragement most at this stage, and I love guiding them toward STEM paths. I remind them to keep going even when challenges feel impossible. “Never give up” is something I say every day.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was coaching our high school robotics team. After a year of challenges, we qualified for the World Championship in Houston and earned a 1st place award our school’s first. Seeing their pride was unforgettable. Another powerful moment came after NASA’s SOFIA mission, when students who had never shown interest in STEM asked about NASA internships. What would you do with the $25,000?

It’s not something I’ve thought much about as a teacher. I’ve been focused on the assembly with Bill Nye. I’d donate a portion to children-oriented organizations like Ronald McDonald House and Duke Hospital, along with many other groups that support kids. I’d also treat myself to the Star Trek convention in Vegas—I’m a proud Trekkie! And of course help Mom!
