Deprise Tomberlin

I love teaching because I am able to help students love math and understand how it applies to them in the real world.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I have always loved school and learning. As a child, I would come home from school and play school with my little brother. I would be the teacher, and I would make him be the student. Some of the most important impacts and memories I have had are from teachers that once taught me. They influenced me in such a positive way that I wanted to have that same effect on other students as well.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

The most memorable teaching experience I have had is when I taught a lesson on geometric sequences and comparing that sequence to arithmetic sequences. I had an activity that allowed the students to complete a scavenger hunt that was similar to clue. I play mystery music while students completed the skill as well. The students were engaged and excited to learn. A lot of them began to understand the difference between the two sequences in Algebra I.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use that money to pay off some of my student debt, and to help pay for things that I need in my classroom.
