Tell us why you became a teacher

I had a tough semester in my undergrad when I was ill and realized that I didn't love the subjects I was studying. I did some soul searching and realized my own K-12 educational experience changed the trajectory of my life and hoped that I could help others make similar positive choices. My upbringing was a challenging and I hoped I could help students who came from similar circumstances.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

In the midst of my 24th year of teaching English, I was finishing my master's degree in science education and a position opened up in my school's science department. I decided that since I'd earned enough credits for a science endorsement in my teaching license that I would apply for the new position. I got the job and felt surprisingly refreshed and invigorated teaching chemistry and biology while I finished my degree. It was one of the fastest bonding experiences I've ever had with my student.

What would you do with the $25,000?

My older son is looking at earning a PhD and the younger son will graduate high school soon to begin a culinary career. I'd like to help them as much as possible. I also wouldn't mind taking a chunk out of my mortgage, buying a newer car, or doing a little more traveling. It's a dream of mine to attend the Olympics. I've been coaching track and field for 20 years and watching athletes perform at their peak would be a dream come true. I have many possibilities.
